The Groundhog - a mobile 12 foot unit

When mains services are not available our welfare units are perfect: self-contained with their own generator and delivered with half/full tank of fuel. Offering speedy installation, flexibility and security our compact 'Groundhog' GP360D Secure Mobile Welfare unit is supplied equipped with an integral 6kVA diesel generator, toilet compartment, wash station, drying room, hot and cold water and 6 seat canteen area with a microwave. All units are fitted with solar panels to keep the battery topped up for you.

Fast Installation

Because of its compact size and lightness (only 1700kg), the Groundhog does not run-up costly transport charges and can be delivered with in a 35 mile radius of Bristol. The Groundhog Welfare Unit can be delivered using only a van, which means speedy delivery when required and keeps your costs down. It is easily and safely installed by one person. It is equipped with a retractable axle and a unique built-in hydraulic system for safely raising and lowering the cabin to the ground. The fully HSE compliant Groundhog welfare unit can be installed and operational within three minutes of arrival on site.

The Groundhog Secure Mobile Welfare unit is of theft and vandal resistant all-steel construction with a double point locking mechanism securing its tow coupling and hydraulic system controls.

Table & Bench seating for up to 6 persons. Amenities include electric wall mounted heater, microwave & kettle. Hot water wash with large sink.

Generator & Drying Area

Diesel Generator with exhaust venting through roof area & access to the fuel tank. Powers a tubular heater and 240v light.. Drying area includes coat hooks, ventilation panel & bulkhead.

Toilet & Washbasin

Installed with plastic recirculating toilet including ventilation pipe. Washbasin with a foot pump and proper warm water hand wash. 12 Volt L.E.D. light with motion sensor. The all important toilet roll holder.

TLC from AC&S

Our welfare units are sent out with a microwave, kettle and complimentary tea, coffee and biscuits. Weekly servicing is also included in the price.

1What is a welfare unit?
A welfare unit is a portable or static cabin designed to provide essential facilities for workers on construction sites, infrastructure projects, and other temporary work locations. These self-contained units typically include toilets, washing facilities, a canteen or rest area, drying room, and heating—all powered by an integral generator or mains connection. Welfare units ensure workers have access to hygienic, comfortable facilities regardless of how remote or undeveloped the work site may be.
2Are welfare facilities legally required on construction sites?
Yes. Under UK law, employers must provide adequate welfare facilities for all workers. The Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 and the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 set out minimum requirements including toilets, handwashing facilities with hot and cold water, drinking water, rest and eating areas, and changing and drying facilities. For notifiable projects lasting more than 30 days or involving more than 500 person-days of work, welfare facilities must be in place before work begins.
3How many people can a welfare unit accommodate?
Accommodation capacity varies by unit size. A standard 12ft mobile welfare unit typically caters for 6 workers, whilst larger 16ft units can serve up to 10–12 people, and 24ft static units accommodate even bigger teams. The HSE guidance suggests providing approximately one toilet for every 7–15 workers on site. Our team can advise on the most suitable configuration based on your workforce size and project requirements.
4What facilities are included in a typical welfare unit?
A standard welfare unit includes a chemical or recirculating toilet, handwashing basin with hot and cold water, a canteen area with table seating and cooking facilities such as microwave and kettle, a drying room with coat hooks for wet clothing and PPE, heating and lighting, and power sockets. At AC&S, we also provide complimentary tea, coffee, and biscuits, with weekly servicing included in the hire price.
5Do welfare units need a mains power or water connection?
No—our welfare units are entirely self-contained. Each unit features an integral diesel generator that provides all power for heating, lighting, hot water, and appliances. Fresh water tanks and waste tanks are built in, meaning the unit can operate independently at sites with no mains services whatsoever. This makes our welfare units ideal for greenfield sites, roadworks, and remote locations.
6How quickly can a welfare unit be delivered and installed?
AC&S prides itself on fast turnaround. Our mobile Groundhog units can often be delivered within 24–48 hours and are operational within just three minutes of arrival on site. Because these compact units weigh only 1,700kg, they can be transported by van rather than requiring larger vehicles, making delivery quicker and more cost-effective. Static units take slightly longer to position but are still ready for use almost immediately after delivery.
7How often are welfare units serviced?
All AC&S welfare units include weekly servicing as standard, which covers toilet waste removal, cleaning, restocking of essential supplies, and general maintenance checks. If your project requires more frequent servicing due to heavy usage or larger workforce numbers, we can arrange additional visits to ensure facilities remain hygienic and fully functional throughout your hire period.
